This week in social media, YouTube has made some changes concerning which accounts are able to add external links in their videos.

Users must now join the YouTube Partner Program in order to be able to add external links—typically added to videos in the form of end cards.

By having to join the YouTube Partner Program, YouTube can verify accounts prior to approval, thereby preventing channels in violation of the platform’s terms of service from posting content.

What does this all mean?

  • You must be a part of the YouTube Partner Program to add end cards.
  • To become a member of the Partner Program, you must enable your channel for monetization. The next time you attempt to add an external link a notice will appear requesting you to enable your channel for monetization.
  • This does not mean you will be required to monetize your channel with ads.
  • Your channel will need to have at least 10,000 public views or more to be approved into the Partner Program.

Embedding interactive links in your videos enables your viewers to quickly access the information they want, when they want it. If you’re curious about what interactive video can do, check out some recent Advantis interactive video projects.
